A massive eruption at Askja in 1875 poisoned much of the farmland in the North East.
Many decided to leave Iceland at this time for the USA and Canada and Vopnafjörður r was
a major departure point for this emigration. No doubt the church provided a source of comfort
and hope for those who set out on this journey into the unknown.
