Flatey BL06-07-05
|
Flatey is the largest island in Breiðafjörður. It has been occupied since earliest times.
Once a monastery stood here but now a collection of brightly coloured 19th century wooden
houses cluster around the harbour on its northern shore. The island has a rich and diverse plant
life which attracts many thousands of birds during the breeding season. Much of the island is
set aside as a nature reserve at this time.
