Iceland adopted Christianity around AD1000. The first bishopric was established
in 1056 at Skálholt and shortly after, in 1106, a second episcopal seat at Hólar. The monastery
remained a focus for learning and culture for over 500 years and is no doubt where the monks first
transcribed many of the sagas. Jón Arason, the last Catholic bishop at Hólar, resisted the Lutheran
reformation until he was murdered in 1550. The present cathedral was built in 1759-63 from local red sandstone
and replaced earlier wooden churches dating back to the 11th century.
